A fun, photogenic event I covered…

I went to an event this week where a group of volunteers were building a rain garden.  It was a great event, and a photogenic one at that!

They constructed a trench that would lead into a garden of native plants, being watered by the rainwater runoff from the roof gutters.  The garden receives nourishment while catching the contaminated runoff that would otherwise enter sewers and open waterways.

I created this story as an audioslideshow, which was a format that lent itself very well to the content.  My greatest challenge was trying to think about describing the technical aspects of how this garden would work through narration, interviews, and photos.  I found myself dissapointed at one point because I was interviewing an environmental engineer and, out of the corner of my eye, caught a group of kids smearing mud on one another’s faces.  Too many places to be at one time.

I definitely agree with the advice on reportr.net/.  You really have to plan the sequencing and what you’ll pair with what when you’re covering the event.
